Here is a few reasons why: The "Common Snapping Turtle" native to Ontario, cannot retract into its shell like other turtles, as a means of 'protection'. Instead, the turtle will defend itself by rearing up, extending their long neck and lunge to snap as it is their only means of defence. The "Common Snapping Turtle" is likely to get caught in the undercarriage of the vehicle, resulting in rolling them over causing death or extensive injuries such as a cracked carapace or plastron, broken jaw, limb and head trauma. Smaller turtles like the "Midland Painted Turtle", will often stay in the middle of the road like a sitting target or 'scurry' across the road. Both often result in life threatening injuries or their demise. Please stop if it's safe to do so, and help the turtle cross the road in the direction it is going. Shovels, car mats, heavy blankets all work well Use the back shell of the turtle (NOT the tail) to lift the turtle so you can get it fully onto your item. Then carefully drag them across the road. Here is a few reasons why: The "Common Snapping Turtle" native to Ontario, cannot retract into its shell like all other turtles, as a means of 'protection'. Instead, the turtle will defend itself by rearing up, extending their long neck and lunge to snap as it is their only means of defence. The "Common Snapping Turtle" is likely to get caught in the undercarriage of the vehicle, resulting in rolling them over causing death or extensive injuries such as a cracked carapace or plastron, broken jaw, limb and head trauma. Smaller turtles like the "Midland Painted Turtle", will often stay in the middle of the road like a sitting target or 'scurry' across the road. Both often result in life threatening injuries or their demise. Please stop if it's safe to do so, and help the turtle cross the road in the direction it is going. Second only to habitat loss, road mortality is the biggest reason for the decline in their turtle populations. EDIT: A couple additional points for questions in the comments if it is not safe for you and others to stop or avoid straddling a turtle then of course the best option is to straddle. But in cases where this can be avoided please consider the damage that straddling a turtle can cause to the turtle Common snapping turtles found in Ontario cannot break broom sticks or take off your finger. They have a bite capacity less than a human and only snap to try and scare you away since they cannot pull fully into their shell. Of course it is always best to be aware of their ability to snap and thus help them in a way that is safe for you and keeps your hands clear of their mouth. https://www.turtleskingston.com/moving-a-turtle Always move a turtle in the direction it was heading. We like to say turtles are stubborn. If you move them the opposite direction they were heading then they will just turn around and try to cross the road again - meaning you didn’t actually help them. Yes where they are going may not be safe but they are headed somewhere specific and will encounter many human made threats along the way. We also rely on volunteers to monitor turtles and protect their nests in our downtown Kingston monitoring site. If you are interested in volunteering please fill out our volunteer from below. We recruit new volunteer drivers every March and April. You can purchase or make a nest protector to place on your own property. Note, if you are placing a nest protector on public or private lands, you need permission from the landowner. Place the nest protector with your contact information attached, then email the landowner to confirm you can leave it there. The City of Kingston and other towns can be used as an example of successful changes being made by the Public Works Department for the benefit of turtles. Snapping turtles have a nasty disposition when on land as a result of a small belly plate (or plastron) that provides little protection to their exposed skin. Snapping turtles are thought to live more than 100 years and take upwards of 20 years to reach sexual maturity. This, combined with low survival rate of eggs and hatchlings, is one reason the Snapping turtle is listed as a species of Special Concern. In fact, it is estimated that it takes about 1500 eggs and 59 years to replace one lost adult Snapping turtle. They live in the water and will come onto land to nest and migrate. Although you may have seen many painted turtles, they are still considered a species of Special Concern because of high road mortality rates that drastically impact their population numbers. Partially related to their need for a larger habitat and their tendency to migrate on land, these turtles are listed as Threatened in Ontario and Endangered in Nova Scotia. The Musk turtle is also known as a ‘Stinkpot’ since produces a musky, skunk-like odour when disturbed. This turtle species is listed as Special Concern.
